MG KX Momentum Racing celebrated a fantastic first race weekend at Brands Hatch in Kent, as the 2012 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) sprang into action. The team’s hard work to get the two brand new MG6’s ready for the season was rewarded in spectacular style with an unbelievable debut win.
Race One of the day saw Jason start strongly and move through the field and incredibly on just lap 15 of the MG6’s first ever race, it was challenging for the lead. Unfortunately some contact at Paddock Hill Bend saw the Vauxhall Jason was battling retire and him drop down the order to finish fourth. Andy Neate set about making his way through the field following a difficult qualifying session yesterday and improved to bring the second Triple Eight run car home in a strong 12th.
Buoyed by the solid first race performance and with the team beginning to unlock a little more of the cars pace, Jason headed into Race Two optimistically. The effort from all of the team was rewarded superbly with a podium position in just the cars second ever race outing. A bonus point was added as Jason underlined the pace in the new MG with the fastest lap of the race. Andy had a strong start and battled through the field to 6th, only to lose time and positions as he took evasive action to avoid the Honda of Shedden in front of him, which struck technical difficulties, leaving Andy to eventually come home 14th.
Race 3 of the day started in dramatic fashion, as on Lap 2 the Ford of Jackson ran wide damaging the car which left oil on the racing line. A melee of cars subsequently spun off on the slippery surface, causing carnage and the race to be red flagged. At the re-start Jason showed that his Triple Eight crew were finding more and more speed in the car as he steadily moved up the order, before hunting down leader Jordan to snatch the lead with five laps to go and cruise home to take a superb first victory for MG KX Momentum Racing.
Jason Plato, MG KX Momentum Racing #99:
“You couldn’t write the script for that one could you! It’s been a huge challenge through the winter to get here, but the faith shown in me and the Triple Eight team by our partners at Tesco has been fantastic and the feeling now to win on our debut is just incredible! It’s my finest race weekend and I just can’t believe we’re leading the championship!“
Andy Neate, MG KX Momentum Racing #44:
“A disappointing weekend for me overall, we just didn’t seem to get any luck out there. But I’m hugely encouraged by what Jason has been able to achieve and I can’t wait to get to Donington and go again“
Ian Harrison, MG KX Momentum Racing Team Principal:
“I’m absolutely delighted, if a little amazed at what we have been able to achieve this weekend. But we have a fantastic crew at Triple Eight and with the amount of hard work everyone has put in to get us here, it’s no less than they deserve. I’m sure there will be tougher days ahead and so we won’t rest on our laurels, but a debut win is a special achievement”
