Rain and red flags in qualifying at Brands Hatch

It was a story of rain and red flags in the opening Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) qualifying session of the 2017 season at Brands Hatch Indy this afternoon.

With both Árón Taylor-Smith and Daniel Lloyd making their MG debuts, it turned out to be a frustrating day as they finished P19 and P25 respectively.

There was good early pace for the MG RCIB Insurance Racing pair as Taylor-Smith sat fourth with Lloyd behind him in fifth when the first red flag came out.

Even at that stage the rain threatened, although never properly materialised. All cars rejoined the track when the green flags emerged and just when it looked like the MG pair were making inroads on the time sheets, another red flag halted their progress.

With Jeff Smith sitting in provisional pole, the rain came down again just moments after this latest restart. That all-but ended the session with just under ten minutes remaining.

No improvement was possible for any driver and the session ended with Taylor-Smith and Lloyd facing an uphill task in race one at 11.30 tomorrow morning. Race two and three will follow at 14.17 and 17.12 respectively.

You can watch live coverage of all three races on ITV4 from 10.15am. We will have regular updates on Facebook and Twitter
