Plato and Tordoff kick off the 2013 BTCC season

After the fantastic first season together, Jason Plato, the MG KX Momentum Racing team and Tesco believe they can win the British Touring Car crown this year, especially now young talent Sam Tordoff has joined the team.

The BTCC is the most popular national racing championship in the UK with live TV coverage on ITV4. Last season, at the wheel of an MG6 supported by Tesco Momentum99 Super Unleaded, Plato won six races, finishing third in the drivers’ table.

Plato, the most successful driver in BTCC history with 74 race wins and two Championship titles (2001 and 2010), believes the 2013 title is within reach: “We’re excited and looking forward to the year. We did a great job in 2012 and enjoyed our programme with Tesco Petrol Filling Stations. But our rivals won’t stand still and it’ll be tough. We’ve done a lot of work over the winter and there’s more to do – we have to evolve the car. The Championship will be better this year but we expect to be in the title fight.”

Sam Tordoff – a frontrunner in the Porsche Carrera Cup, the feeder series for the BTCC – has joined the Tesco-backed squad, replacing 2012 driver Andy Neate. Plato believes Tordoff, who is also a member of Tesco’s KX Akademy young driver scheme, will be an asset to the team.

“When he did his one-off BTCC outing in 2010, he did a good job,” says Plato. “The Carrera Cup is very competitive and he’s got good pace. It’ll be important to get him up to speed. We want two cars at the sharp end.”
