Both the MG6GTs of Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff were back among the points for the MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save team at this weekend’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship meeting at Oulton Park.
Despite the mixed weather conditions, Plato was on the pace in Saturday’s qualifying and was only pipped to pole position in the final minutes by the BMW of Colin Turkington, while Tordoff started Sunday’s race from fifth on the grid.
After the tough weekend endured at Thruxton before the early season break, it was a much improved points haul this time around. All was going well in race one as a 3rd-placed finish for Plato was backed up by a 6th from Tordoff.
In race two, Plato was left frustrated as he followed the wide, defensive back-end of Rob Austin’s Audi around the narrow Cheshire circuit. Unable to make the pass, he had to settle for 4th. That frustration was little compared to his young teammate. Tordoff - running in sixth - was left to rue a costly mistake after running wide at Lodge corner and eventually crossed the line in 9th.
The weather changed drastically for race three, but both drivers were on course for decent finishes in the testing, wet conditions. Plato came home in third but was subsequently penalised for a ‘gaining an unfair advantage’ after a collision with Rob Collard. The stewards issued a 1.5 second penalty which resulted in a one-place demotion. Tordoff was facing the same problem that his experienced teammate encountered in race two, as he struggled to get beyond Austin’s Audi and had settle for 6th.
With six races still to go, the results mean the MG drivers stay with the leading pack challenging for the championship with Plato’s MG just 36 points behind the BMW of the new leader Colin Turkington.
The MG team don’t have long to wait for a chance to close the gap as rounds 13, 14 and 15 take place at Croft on the weekend of 28th May.
